What is/are “Dangerous Goods” (DG)?   

Dangerous Goods are articles or substances which are capable of posing a hazard to health, safety, property and/or the environment and which are shown in the list of dangerous goods in the current IATA DG Regulations or which are classified according to these IATA DG Regulations.

Dangerous Goods are defined as those goods which meet the criteria of one or more of nine UN hazard classes and where applicable, to one of three UN Packing Groups according to the provisions of this section

The nine classes relate to the type of hazard whereas the packing group relate to the applicable degree of danger within the class.

Different kinds of batteries/cells   

  • Battery:  “Battery” means two or more cells which are electrically connected together and fitted with devices necessary for use, for example, case, terminals, marking and protective devices. 

  • Cell:  A single encased electrochemical unit (one positive and one negative electrode) which exhibits a voltage differential across its two terminals, and may contain protective devises.      

  • Button cell: A button cell battery is a round small cell where the overall height is less than the diameter. Button cells are often referred to as “coin” cells.  


Important!  
Keep in mind that batteries may NEVER be packed together with the following classes/divisions;  
Class 1 (Except 1.4S), Division 2.1, Class 3, Division 4.1 and Division 5.1  

Cells and Batteries identified as being damaged or defective are FORBIDDEN for transport. 

 
Definition equipment regarding lithium batteries   

For the purpose of lithium batteries/cells, “equipment” means the device or apparatus for which the lithium batteries/cells will provide electrical power for its operation. 

Note:  Large equipment can be offered for transport unpackaged or on pallets when the cells or batteries are afforded equivalent protection by the equipment in which they are contained.
